RUGARD Knowledge Zone

RUGARD is a skin expert. The skin is a sensory organ which senses pressure, vibration, touch, pain and temperature. It protects us from cold, heat and radiation, as well as pressure, blows and friction. It also protects us against chemicals and loss of heat and water. Its functions are defence against micro-organisms, resorption of active ingredients, perspiration and regulation of heat and circulation.

Our skin

Why does our skin age and why do we need to give it special care? Over the years the skin becomes thinner as the rate of cell division in the epidermis declines. The connective tissue loses elasticity and tone because the skin produces less collagen.

The purpose of skin

The skin is a sensory organ which senses pressure, vibration, touch, pain and temperature. It protects us from cold, heat and radiation, as well as pressure, blows and friction. It also protects us against chemicals and loss of heat and water. Its functions are defence against micro-organisms, resorption of active ingredients, perspiration and regulation of heat and circulation.

The causes of skin ageing

Over the years the skin becomes thinner as the rate of cell division in the epidermis declines. The connective tissue loses elasticity and tone because the skin produces less collagen. Because the blood circulates less efficiently in the dermis (the second thick layer underneath the top layer), its supply of oxygen and nutrients is reduced. The hydrolipid film no longer completely covers the skin so it becomes dry and cracked and loses moisture. Choosing the right skin care for your skin type can help.

The different skin types

Normal skin: fresh, silky, rosy, firm, with small pores, non-sensitive, neither too dry nor too greasy. The T-zone may be slightly greasy but otherwise free from blemishes.

Dry skin: small pores, low in oil/moisture, premature formation of wrinkles, skin feels tight, relatively pale.

Sensitive skin: reddened, blotchy, thin, permanently reddened cheeks and nose, tiny visible veins, itching and flaking.

Combination skin: Impure T zone, large pores, quickly becomes greasy, dry cheek areas, possibly some impurities.

Impure, greasy skin: large pores, quickly becomes greasy, generally very shiny, lots of impurities.

Mature skin: skin becoming less elastic, formation of wrinkles, increased dryness, cheek and nose areas reddened (visible veins), thin skin, pigment spots.
